NYC-Based STEM Educator (Part-Time)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

WhyMaker is looking for multiple experienced, independent educators to teach hands-on, STEM curriculum to students ages K - College as a part of a two-year grant in New York State.

Successful candidates will be teaching students in after-school, weekend and summer learning environments. The curriculum includes a pre-developed series of 4 lessons each with hands-on activities on Electricity Basics and Zero Emission Vehicles. Lessons are modified for each age group, however, educators will need to adapt and customize each lesson to meet the needs of each different learning environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Ability to implement hands-on STEM lesson plans in after school, weekend & summer program settings
-Able to make connections and build relationships with K-College students
-Customizing of lesson plans and presentations ahead of timeLiaison with on-site program managers to ensure smooth implementation
-Responsible for hands-on activity kits and additional materials
-Set-up and clean-up of materials for each program
-Must be on time, organized and prepared

QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience teaching STEM & hands-on lessons required
-Able to commit to project through 2023
-Bilingual in Spanish a plus
-Must have transportation within 50 miles of your home in New York State (WhyMaker will cover transportation expenses for longer distances)
-Proficient in Google Suite
-Bachelor degree required, NYS teaching certification preferred
-New York State background checks and finger printing required
-Covid Vaccination required

SALARY RANGE
$25 - $100 per hour

This is a 2 year, per-project, part time, freelance opportunity. Preparation hours will be flexible, but you are required to be present during class times you are scheduled to teach. Times of classes will vary throughout the week, including after school, evenings, weekends and summers. Teaching will take place in person and on virtual platforms. Travel around New York State will be required. Position begins immediately. Contractor role. US-based applicants only. Position is flexible.

STEM Curriculum Writers and Instructional Designers

JOB DESCRIPTION:

WhyMaker is seeking multiple STEM curriculum writers and instructional designers for a variety of ongoing projects. These contract-based positions include writing curriculum, lesson plans, modules, online courses, blog posts or teacher training for a variety of diverse STEM products and projects.

The successful candidates will have expert-level knowledge of K-12 STEM, Makerspace, and Design Thinking teaching. And have knowledge of products for K-12 settings like robotics, electricity, alternative energy, electronics, building kits, 3D printing, laser engraving, computer science, computational thinking, digital platforms and more (including these products). The successful candidates will have teaching experience and experience creating content for the general population of teachers across the US (not just yourself).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Research and practice with STEM educational products as requested
     - Projects may be tied to already developed products or products may need to be identified
-Create new and unique projects for K - 12 classrooms using STEM products
-Develop scope and sequence for long curriculum units
-Generate objectives and outlines of lessons and curriculum
-Lead in developing instructional materials and student materials for curriculum or lesson plans
     - Instructional materials may include writing in specific lesson plan templates, creating assessments and objectives, connecting to standards, teacher training information, front matter and additional resources, and collaborating virtually or in-person.
     - Student materials may include worksheets, design journals, portfolios, labs, instructions, assessments, etc.
-Create content that is easy to follow for teachers and engaging for students
-Implement diverse instructional strategies for diverse groups of learners
-Compile into well polished and client-ready documents

QUALIFICATIONS:
-Teaching experience REQUIRED
-Expert with STEAM, Maker Ed, Design Thinking, & Project-Based Learning
-Have a strong understanding of cognitive, social and physical abilities at various age levels
-Able to think about flexible classroom situations and grade levels
-Strong ability to make connections to the real world and careers
-Ability to research, find and use the appropriate standards
-Be action-oriented providing ongoing project updates
-Independent thinker and problem solverNeat and organized, paying attention to details
-Be open to feedback and modifications
-Excellent grammar and writing skills

This is a recurring per-project opportunity. Highly competitive project-based compensation. Hours are flexible. Expect 10-20 hours per week, working within your own schedule. Contractor role. 100% remote. US-based applicants only.
